SSA Accreditation

Elevating Standards in Soil Science

Soil Science Australia (SSA) offers a nationally recognised accreditation framework that upholds the highest standards of knowledge, ethics, and practice in soil science. Whether you’re a mid-career professional or a seasoned expert, SSA accreditation enhances your credibility and supports your career growth.

Why Get Accredited?

SSA accreditation is more than a credential—it’s a mark of excellence. It:

  • Validates your expertise in soil science
  • Enhances employability and professional recognition
  • Sets quality benchmarks for access to work
  • Encourages lifelong learning
  • Provides assurance to employers, consultants, and regulators.

The SSA Accreditation Framework

Governed by the SSA Accreditation Board, the framework includes two complementary programs:

Certified Professional Soil Scientist (CPSS)

With over 25 years of history, CPSS is designed for professionals with a broad education in soil science and at least five years of experience (three in Australia).

Specialties include:

Registered Soil Practitioner (RSP)

Launched in 2023–2024 to support the Australian Government’s National Soil Action Plan 2023–2028, RSP recognises individuals with practical expertise in one of six areas:

How to Apply for Accreditation

The application process is straightforward and consistent across all accreditations.

First go to the webpage for your chosen accreditation and read the standards and guidelines

Then complete the relevant application form that requires:

  • Work examples aligned with the relevant standards
  • Contact details of 2 to 3 referees

SSA is committed to continuous improvement and innovation:

  • Regular review of accreditations
  • Expanded marketing and outreach
  • Promotion of third-party training pathways
  • Development of new accreditations in soil biology and conservation
  • Pursuit of ISO accreditation against AS/NZ ISO/IEC 17024:2013 Conformity assessment — General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons.

Global Collaboration

SSA is leading international efforts to explore a global recognition program for accreditation for soil scientists. CEO Michael Walker chairs a Working Group established in 2024 within the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS) to assess global demand and feasibility.

Accreditation

The Registered Soil Practitioner is a new national accreditation program for soil practitioners to enhance and standardise expertise across Australia.

Developed in collaboration with soil scientists, industry, government, land and natural resource managers and the wider soil community the accreditation is a symbol of trust for people who work with soils.

RSP accreditation can be achieved through a demonstration of experience and expertise, training and/or recognition of prior learning.
